My art starts with a feeling, not necessarily a picture, but I'm attracted to visually create a “mood” with my paintings. In my minimalistic style, I tend to go for stillness, openness, quiet reflection and a moodiness of atmosphere. My larger paintings create a connection to land particularly in the Central Otago region or the wilderness of the South Island.
I work two or three paintings at a time, mostly along the same theme so I can really get the feel for the series I'm creating. I ‘m consistently drawn to colours that are muted, rustic, moody skies, soft browns and reds with ochres in the mix.
I work methodically, not chaotic or in bursts but with dedicated painting days so I can work at my own pace and get the atmosphere I'm looking to produce.
