Beyond The Surface Taupo Mixed Media Artists Ctdc 20 Oct 2025

Taupō Museum is proud to present Beyond the Surface: Taupō Harbour Reimagined, a new exhibition by the Taupō Mixed Media Artists, opening in the Main Gallery from 25 October to 8 December.

This locally inspired exhibition invites visitors to experience Taupō Boat Harbour through a variety of artistic perspectives. Featuring photography, printmaking, and mixed media, the works explore the harbour’s history, vibrant colours, boat shapes and its role in the community.

Tapuaeharuru, the heart of Taupō Boat Harbour, has long held cultural and strategic significance. Before the arrival of Pākehā, it was central to the lives of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, who maintain deep connections to the area. Later, the bay became the site of a redoubt for the Armed Constabulary, guarding the river crossing. Today, it remains a vital waterway for the district and the country, serving fishing enthusiasts, tourism operators, and locals alike while retaining its natural beauty.

Beyond the Surface is unique to Taupō,” Piata Winitana-Murray, the exhibitions curator for Taupō Museum says. “It reflects the emotional and creative connection our local artists have with the harbour. It’s a celebration of a place that means so much to the people of the district.”

Each artist presents their interpretation of the meaning of the harbour, resulting in a layered collection that shows us the familiar through a new prism. The exhibition highlights the diversity of Taupō’s creative community.

The public is invited to attend the opening event on Friday 24 October at 5.30pm, where guests can meet the artists and enjoy a first look at the works.

Beyond the Surface: Taupō Harbour Reimagined runs at Taupō Museum from 25 October to 8 December. The museum is open from 10am to 4.30pm daily and entry is free for Taupō District residents with proof of address.
