Hot Tub 2025

Local funk and soul band Hot Tub are once again aiming to soothe competitors’ tired muscles or supporters’ vocal cords with some cool music the day after the Taupō Ironman.

The group’s Sunday Soul performance at Lava Glass Sculpture Garden from 2-4pm on Sunday March 8 follows on from recent appearances at Dinner at the Lake.

Front man Donovan Bixley, one of three singers who will themselves be exercising their vocal cords, says the set list is a mix of groovy tunes designed to make the most of the vocalists, rhythm section and a seven-member horn line-up.

While he says some of the tunes like ‘Don’t Know Why’ by Norah Jones might be fairly mellow, other numbers like a funky arrangement of ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ and Billy Joel’s ‘Easy Money’ are upbeat enough to bop along to if anyone needs to work off a bit of cramp.

The group has also added a couple of new numbers to its repertoire in the past few weeks.

This will be the second year running the band has performed in the garden of national significance the day following Ironman, with close to 100 attending last year.

Lava Glass owner Christine Robb says the garden was designed as an amphitheatre for performances with plenty of space for audience members to spread out on rugs, camping chairs or cushions with a picnic.

“Or the licensed café is open and platters can be pre-ordered through the Lava Glass website.”

Tickets to the chill out gig are $21.50 on Trybooking ‘Sunday Soul’ Sunday Soul Tickets, Lava Glass Sculpture Garden, Taupō | TryBooking New Zealand, or $20 at the door on the afternoon.

The Lava Glass Gallery and Sculpture Garden are on State Highway 5 at Wairakei.
