Fancy yourself a budding actor? Now is your chance to be part of a unique, open-air production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Taupō Timebank’s community garden.

The play follows four young lovers who flee into an enchanted forest, where a quarrel between the King and Queen of the Fairies, a mischievous sprite, and a troupe of amateur actors rehearsing a play collide in a single midsummer night of mistaken love and magic.

“The opportunity to work in this incredible space with one of Shakespeare’s finest comedies is a real pinch-me moment. It will be a magical experience,” explains director Toni Sullivan.

“I love the timeless nature of Shakespeare’s work and making it accessible and fun for audiences of all ages.”

The open casting call is for anyone aged 16 years and over, and Sullivan is encouraging anyone interested to come along.

“From absolute beginners who have always wanted to give it a go, to committed Shakespeare lovers – we’ll be here to support you along the way and have a lot of fun creating something special together.”

This is especially true for any young people who are keen to be part of the production.

“Term 4 can be very busy with exams and assignments, so we want to make sure we can work around the schedules and commitments of young people who’d like to be involved.”

Performances are from Tuesday, February 2 to Saturday, February 6 next year, while auditions will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026.

A native Texan, she studied drama in New York City before performing on stage professionally at the Edinburgh and New York Fringe Festivals, as well as with the Adirondack Shakespeare Company.

“Kathleen has an unbelievable grasp of Shakespeare and will be a huge asset in helping the cast interpret and understand their dialogue. We’re so lucky to have her,” Sullivan says.
