The need for a number of students interested in drama to get performance time for NCEA assessments has spurred Centre Stage to host a Youth Showcase this Friday (September 25).
The showcase will feature a range of genres from improv (improvisational theatre) to one act plays, stage combat, clowning, singing and monologues.
Toni Sullivan, who coaches theatre improvisation on a Monday night at the playhouse, says the night will have a dozen or so youth, ranging in age from 15 to 21, taking the stage to present the skills they have developed over the last 18 months both at Centre Stage and through their schools.
The Centre Stage committee was happy to create the space for this to happen, she says.
“We love the energy and vibrancy as well as talent they bring to our organisation and Centre Stage are really excited to be able to showcase the amazing youth we have participating in theatre.”
Centre Stage president Kylie Dumble says those involved have been doing front of house, make-up, acting in shows – getting a well-rounded experience in all aspects of the theatre.
“It’s great to see them so involved in our artistic community at such a young age, because unfortunately, they’re not always finding the opportunities at school, so it’s been really cool to be able to incorporate that into what we do at Centre Stage.”
The Youth Showcase is on at Centre Stage’s Playhouse Theatre, 2 Matai Street, on Friday September 25, doors open at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7pm.
A light supper along with tea and coffee will be available.
Entry for the public event is by donation. More information at Community Theatre | Centre Stage Taupo | Taupō
